Mickleham Primary School

Mickleham Primary School

Mickleham Primary School, a rapidly growing school in the community, has a current enrollment of approximately 400 students. They were established in 1871 and continue to take pride in ensuring that all children feel connected and included. They offer opportunities for children to meet one another, and welcome parents to become involved with the school.

Mickleham Primary School is located in large, green school grounds with their bluestone library. The school is a place where all children can play together and have fun:

  • A large oval with football goals and a running track
  • Large Sandpit
  • Soccer pitch
  • Large shaded play equipment , enjoyable for students from Prep to Grade Six
  • An asphalt play area, great for ball games
  • A quiet play area where students can participate in quiet play free from running children and balls
  • An undercover rubberised play area

A canteen is also available, serving lunch and snacks Monday through Thursday.

Mickleham Primary School is developing and implementing School Wide Positive Behavior Support. This is based on the idea that children learn more than just literacy and numeracy. They also learn behaviour. This model entails that teachers and schools have the responsibility to teach appropriate behaviours to children and to establish expectations for behaviour.

The Wesleyan School No. 1 was Mickleham’s first school. 423 was a school for the denomination of Wesleyan, which opened in Mickleham on April 1, 1855. It enrolled 48 children, 22 boys and 26 daughters.

This was the site of the first school, now called Mt. Ridley Road is located approximately 2 km east of Mickleham Road. This church building was used for classes until it was demolished by the bluestone school building, School number 1051 in 1871.

The Board of Education approved a new school building in February 1870. The land was purchased from William Saunders, Riseborough Park. Funds were raised through public donations. The school was constructed of locally quarried Bluestone and completed in July 1871. Half the funds for the completion came from local donors. A teacher’s house was approved in 1883 and a weatherboard house in 1884.

The school was closed between June 1951 and February 1953. This was not due to a lack of pupils but because the Education Department could not find a replacement for the Head Teacher, who was about to go on a long-service leave.

There are now over 300 students in 18 classrooms. The school, which was founded in 1855 as a small church school for the community, remains the only school in the area. The sense of belonging and community that it fosters today is just as important as ever.
